We are thrilled to report our students have recently completed our mosaic mural project, which is now permanently displayed in our lower school library. Hundreds of our students have contributed to this exciting and inspiring project, which required an ongoing commitment and lots of determination, collaboration and hard work!

The mosaic project offered all of our students pre-K through 4th grade the opportunity to collaborate with each other in this large scale celebration of creative expression and team work. Mosaic art affords fantastic learning opportunities for children of all ages and can assist in the development of a variety of important abilities including counting and matching, sorting, assembling, problem solving and decision making, just to name a few. Our students were up to the task and they were all excited to get involved.

David Aichinger and Jessica Turtle are Minnesota based artists who traveled all the way to Willamsburg Northside to collaborate with our students on this project. In 2010, David and Jessica founded Tessera Mosaics, a full-time mosaic production studio that is focused on environmental and childhood education initiatives through mosaic murals. Their amazing work is permanently displayed in various schools including the Parkview Center and Harambee Elementary Schools in Minnesota.

As a Reggio Emilia inspired school, the principles of respect, responsibility, and community are fully integrated into all of our programs and activities. Working together on this art piece allowed our students to explore their imagination, curiosity and intuition as well as required them to employ concentration, patience and attention to detail. It was inspiring to witness the students collaborating with each other as well as with our guest artists, further developing trust, responsibility and tolerance as they engage in this joint journey of self expression and discovery.
